Uber Freight, a top digital freight platform, launched a pilot version of its new API for trucking. It’s a significant step forward in industry innovation. The API, developed in collaboration with transportation and logistics giant J.B. Hunt Transport Inc., aims to streamline scheduling processes as well as enhance communication within the freight industry.

Initiating Innovation: SSC and Uber Freight’s API Progress

Convoy, another digital freight matching (DFM) firm, initially introduced the project, known as the Scheduling Standards Consortium (SSC), in 2022 with its participation. Despite Convoy’s closure, the SSC initiative has continued to progress, signaling a commitment to advancing technological standards in the industry.

Uber Freight’s new API integrates into its TMS for improved scheduling. As a result, it facilitates seamless communication between shippers and carriers. However, the API is still in the pilot phase. The team plans a full release to the general market in the second half of 2024.

The SSC initiative aims to establish a technology standard for shipment appointment scheduling. Chiefly, it addresses friction points among carriers, brokers, and shippers. The consortium has grown its membership to include Arrive Logistics, Blue Yonder, Coyote Logistics, and others. New members include e2open, Echo Logistics, One Network Enterprises, and Oracle.

The SSC has moved beyond the planning stage and is now focusing on real-world applications, targeting scheduling both inefficiencies that contribute to increased costs and delays in load handling. By integrating logistics technology platforms with carrier scheduling systems, the scheduling API seeks to automate manual processes and improve visibility across supply chains.

The introduction of Uber Freight’s trucking API represents a significant step toward standardizing scheduling practices in the freight industry. Overall, as the initiative progresses, it is expected to drive efficiency, reduce operational costs, and enhance collaboration among industry stakeholders.
